Bronx Network:
Educational Support Services
Good Shepherd partners with many Bronx public schools to target youth with school-related difficulties. We help young people to stay in school and strengthen their academic skills by offering comprehensive services to students and their families to address problems interfering with academic performance and encourage educational growth.
Attendance Improvement Programs at Bronx High School of Law and Community Service, MS 45, University Heights High School, and High School for Teaching in the Professions
Provide integrated services including attendance monitoring and outreach, counseling, crisis intervention, conflict mediation, extended day activities, tutoring, incentive trips, parent involvement activities and referrals to a broad network of services. Through these efforts, Good Shepherd staff members play a key role in the overall cohesion of each school community and are an important bridge between the home and school.
GED Programs at Monroe Campus and Stevenson Campus
Provides attendance outreach, counseling, crisis intervention, conflict mediation, cultural and social activities as well as post high school planning for GED students to ensure their academic and vocational success.
The Learning to Work program is available at both sites.
YABC Programs at Columbus High School, Grace Dodge High School, Monroe Campus, Stevenson Campus, and Walton High School
Full-time academic programs for youth, ages 17 ½ - 21, to help them complete their education. The program design acknowledges that non-academic factors like family obligations, day care, and work schedules can hinder students from graduating. Students take intensive afternoon and evening classes and focus only on the courses they need to graduate. Operated in collaboration with the DOE, Good Shepherd provides case management; counseling and crisis intervention services; resource referrals; attendance outreach; workshops; academic tutoring and test preparation; college preparation, employment readiness, and career exploration activities; job development and placement; and youth development opportunities.
The Learning to Work program is available at the Monroe Campus and Stevenson Campus sites.
Bronx Alternative Learning Center
A Second Opportunity School (SOS) for middle and high school students undergoing long term suspension from their home schools. Support and counseling services are provided in a school community that helps students to address the challenges and behavioral issues that led to the suspension and return to their home school or to another appropriate educational setting.
Mentoring Programs at Stevenson Campus and Bronx High School of Law and Community Service
In partnership with Ernst & Young, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, and the NYC Department of Education, these programs match more than 90 students with mentors each year. Students also receive support services and participate in work readiness, cultural, and social activities.
