GOOD SHEPHERD SERVICES

Bronx Network:
Family Support Programs

After more than a century of experience working with youth in residential care, Good Shepherd recognized the need to provide services and supports to vulnerable families within their own communities to avert the need for out-of-home care.  We pioneered this new approach in the Bronx more than 30 years ago at a small, green house on University Avenue, where we opened a center in the neighborhood at which social workers provided counseling to families who were struggling to stay together during tough times brought on by poverty, illness, unemployment, homelessness, and other issues.  Over the years, as we have developed additional programs in University Heights and other Bronx communities to address neighborhood needs and concerns, our counseling and family support activities have remained fundamental to our continuum of services.

North Bronx Family Service Center

Our first preventative services program in the Bronx, still housed in that same green house where our work in the Bronx began.  The program provides family group and individual counseling, advocacy, and referral to other services to avert the need for foster care placement and prevent incidences of child abuse and neglect.

Beacon MS 45 Counseling Prevention Program

Provides individual, family and group counseling in conjunction with activities at the Community Center Beacon at MS 45 to avert the need for foster care placement.

Neighborhood Family Empowerment Center

Our newest family counseling program, which became a part of GSS in 2006, it provides similar services to the North Bronx Family Service Center.

Family Literacy Program at PS 79

Provides ESL activities for children who attend P.S. 79 and their parents to promote and support literacy development for families with limited literacy skills.

Single Stop Service Center

A comprehensive service center where individuals and families can come in on a walk-in basis and receive assistance accessing public benefits for which they are eligible.  Services also include legal counseling, financial planning assistance, and referrals to other community-based organizations where participants can receive additional services if needed.
