At Good Shepherd Services, we understand that the cost of backpacks and school supplies can be a heavy burden for many children, youth, and families in New York City. As the new school year approaches, many families are facing the challenge of providing essential supplies for their children. But together, we can lighten their load and ensure every student has a fresh start.
Last year, thanks to the generosity of our partners and supporters, we were able to provide backpacks and supplies to 1,634 youth in Good Shepherds programs and community members. This year, the need has increased, and we’re counting on your support to ensure that every student has the tools they need to succeed in their education.
By supporting our backpack drive, you’ll be giving a child the opportunity to focus on their studies and feel confident as they embark on the new school year. Your contribution will directly support participants in our foster care programs, community centers, and after-school programs.

How to participate in the Backpack Drive:
- Collect new backpacks, as well as school supplies such as pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, and binders and contact us to coordinate a drop-off day and time.
- Organize a fundraiser with your co-workers. Some companies have matching donation programs, which means that for every dollar you donate, your employer will match your contributions!
- Plan a backpack assembly project with your summer interns or a team lead. This is a great way to raise money for school supplies, while also providing a fun and rewarding team-building experience. Once the backpacks are assembled, call 347-514-3428 to coordinate a drop-off day and time.
- Pick a program to adopt and take part in a backpack donation event. Provide backpacks and supplies for the entire program.
- Spread the word on social media tag @goodshepherdNYC and encourage your friends and family to donate. Download image you can share here.

We will be collecting donations for the drive through Friday August 18, 2023 and are looking to purchase and distribute as many backpacks before the first day of school as possible.
