Keeping the Lights On: Why Afterschool Matters

Good Shepherd Services celebrated Lights on Afterschool alongside thousands of communities nationwide — spotlighting the critical hours between 3–6 PM when young people need safe spaces to learn, grow, and thrive.

Two dance flashmobs electrified the Bronx and Brooklyn, bringing our afterschool celebration into the community. Inside our programs, students led art showcases, performances, and many other activities. Afterschool programs create the foundation for social, emotional, and academic development.

Last year alone:

  • 94% of our students became confident in their ability to learn new things
This is growth mindset. This is the difference between a kid who shuts down when something’s hard vs. one who persists. This predicts academic success, career adaptability, resilience.
  • 92% improved their leadership skills
These are the kids who will lead their communities, advocate for themselves, manage teams, create change. You’re building future leaders.
  • 95% identified building positive relationships
This is about connection, trust, belonging. Kids with strong relationships have better mental health, stay in school, avoid risky behaviors. This is protective.

The learning that happens after the school day ends shapes minds, builds leaders, and creates connection.

Let’s keep the lights on afterschool!
